The BAFTAs (aka The British Oscars): Winners, Controversy, and Oscars Indicators

POV: Your movie nerd friends are talking about the BAFTAs and what that might mean for the Oscars.

Full list of winners below! But first…

WHAT IS A BAFTA?

BAFTA: The British Academy Film and Television Awards. The organization first formed and held its inaugural ceremony in 1947. It has evolved since its inception, and delivers (2) separate nights now to honor excellence in film and television.

On Sunday, February 22nd, 2026, the EE BAFTA Film Awards took place, awarding excellence in film from 2025.

I’ll be honest, my favorite thing about the BAFTAs is the focus on being British. Some of their categories are:

Best Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer
Best British Short Animation
Best British Short Film
Rising Star Award (voted for by the public, and is mostly British nominees)

The Rising Star Award went to Robert Aramayo, who also took home the Best Actor win above Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothee Chalamet, and Michael B. Jordan. His starring role in “I Swear” will not release in the US until April 2026. I am DESPERATE to see this movie as the trailer is magnetizing. The story follows a young boy diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome, and the unique struggles that follow. Aramayo’s performance looks to be incredibly immersive, reminding me of how realistic Leo was in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape for a different nervous system disorder.

The film is gathering BIG attention. The real life person Aramayo portrays – John Davidson – was present, and shocked audiences when an uncontrollable vocal tic found its way onto the broadcast. This tic is also defined as Coprolalia: an involuntary, often repetitive, outbursts of swearing, cursing, or socially unacceptable remarks. Some of the presenters and nominees felt very surprised that a BAFTA organizer did not give them any warning ahead of the broadcast or debriefed them following the incident.

Big moments for the BAFTAs included the wins per film:

One Battle After Another*6
Sinners3
Frankenstein3
Hamnet2
I Swear2
Sentimental Value1
Zootopia 21
One Battle After Another is now in the second tier of most wins at the BAFTAs, alongside One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1977)

THE ROAD TO THE OSCARS

The BAFTAs have increasingly indicated big wins at the Oscars. Normally, the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) were the best indicator. The margin for BAFTAs to Oscars wins is steadily on the rise over the past 10 years. Could we see a similar list this spring at the Academy, our are big shakeups in store?

Here are some of the award categories that won at the BAFTAs and Academy Awards in recent years:
